At the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Hawaii, we co-organized the “On The Move: Mobile Pastoralism in the Mediterranean” workshop. Conservationists, pastoralists, and institutions shared experiences, challenges, and strategies, addressing marginalization, rights, gender issues, and youth engagement in pastoral traditions.
At the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Hawaii, as part of the MCNC MC Cafe, we co-organized a workshop titled “On The Move: Mobile Pastoralism in the Mediterranean – Retro-innovation for a Sustainable Future.” The workshop took place on Monday, September 5th, in our exhibition space, amidst photographs celebrating the lives of shepherds, which were greatly appreciated by all attendees. It was moderated by Gonzalo Oviedo of IUCN and convened by DiversEarth for the Mediterranean Consortium for Nature and Culture.
We were fortunate to have a diverse mix of participants, including conservationists and indigenous pastoralists from Kenya and Siberia, and representatives from the institutions that support them. The session began with introductions, followed by participants sharing stories about their practices, experiences, and the challenges they face in their respective countries. Emerging themes included marginalization and rights issues, strategies for supporting these practices in each country, gender issues, and the challenge of encouraging the younger generation to continue this tradition. Concrete steps for moving forward were explored, and we are excited to implement these next steps.
