Join our webinar on 14th June, co-organised by the European Union Committee of Regions, Yolda Initiative, and Euromontana. The event will highlight the importance of pastoralism for sustainability, climate adaptation, and biodiversity, while addressing challenges facing pastoralists.
We invite you to come and join our webinar co-organised by the European Union Committee of Regions, Yolda Initiative and Euromontana on 14th June!
Pastoralism, a time-honoured practice of extensive livestock husbandry on rangelands such as mountains, dry plains, savannahs, steppes, and tundra, plays a vital role in sustainability. This form of livestock husbandry economically utilizes areas unsuitable for mechanized crop farming and/or difficult to access. Rangelands and pastoralists support the livelihoods and food security of millions globally, providing significant benefits for climate change adaptation and mitigation, biodiversity conservation, and ecosystem services such as maintaining open landscapes. In Europe, pastoralism is essential for keeping rural areas vibrant and alive. Maintaining pastoralism is crucial for achieving the EU’s environmental, climate, and biodiversity objectives within the EU Green Deal and supporting the territorial cohesion of the Lisbon Treaty. Furthermore, pastoralism contributes to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
However, pastoralism faces numerous threats including economic constraints, land access issues, seasonal pastureland organization challenges, and pressures related to climate change. In response, the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) calls on the European Commission to develop an Action Plan to better support European pastoralism. Globally, the United Nations is encouraged to designate 2026 as the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP) to further support these ecosystems and livelihoods. This initiative, led by the Government of Mongolia and supported by an international coalition, has been endorsed by the EU and its Member States.
Agenda:
- Contributions of pastoralism to the EU Green Deal
- Support for food security and resilience of rural communities
- Impact of EU policies on pastoralism in the Global South
This event aims to provide a platform for informed dialogue and suggestions on the content of a future EU Action Plan for Pastoralism, including actions to support the UN designation of an IYRP.
